You are looking at “The Great Dane”. This is what they are calling him, you know, the poker players. Gus Hansen earned the respect of the professional poker players in the world after many incredible calls, bets and all-ins. And of course his super poker senses and the admirable poker abilities. Gus is probably one of the last players you’d want to sit next to at a poker table, but on the other hand, he is one super entertainer who can go from a Howard Lederer:ish face to a crossing between Phil “Unabomber” Laak and Phil Ivey. Whatever that really means. Gus Hansen was born in Danish capitol city Copenhagen some 30 years ago. In his late childhood, little Gus experimented with card games like Backgammon and reached professional level in no time. After a couple of years of play and 20 years of age, Gus realized that the Danish backgammon scene wasn’t quite as big as he was hoping for. As a future investment, he spent his money on a ticket to the United States of America, where he ended up in Santa Cruz, California. During his stay, he started visiting the local casinos and became familiar with croupiers and casino owners. Instead of playing backgammon, Gus instead hooked his eyes on various poker games. During these years, he realized that an erratic approach to poker worked well for him. Instead of being predictable, he decided to aim at the other poker players with an extremely aggressive approach that could come out of nowhere, leaving his opponents at their bare knees. Bluff or no bluff, no one could really tell. Unfortunately for Gus, the military service requested for him to join the force. Gus Hansen was obliged to go back to Denmark and finished his duties. After that chapter of his life, he decided to move back to the US. But instead of going back to California, Gus went to the other side of the country and ended up in New York. The streets there were well known for the many gin and backgammon players, which served the young Dane well. Once again, Gus felt confident that his skills would turn him into a professional card player. One day, Gus decided to learn more about poker and particularly Texas Hold’em of all varieties. This game type was everything Gus was looking for, as backgammon simply wasn’t big enough for him. In mid 2002, Gus Hansen entered the beautiful halls of Bellagio. He found himself at the five star casino, thinking about joining the World Poker Tour: Five-Diamond World Poker Classic – which he did. A total of 147 players participated, which of course was quite a lot back then. Little did he know that despite his great confidence and skills, it would take him to the top and make him half a million richer. Today, Gus Hansen is a huge celebrity in the world of poker. His unique and aggressive play has provided him with a confidence boost as many fans gather up to watch him in action. Gus takes his fame lightly, however, but we know that his perfect teeth appeared in the 2004 People Magazine’s cover, dubbed the ’50 Sexiest People’. Now that's what I'd call an American Dream come true. Looks, money and lots of women. |
